Make a fancy dinner in no time with this Simple Coffee Rubbed Steak with a hint of chocolate. Naturally gluten free, low carb and healthy!

Pin This Recipe For Later!

The countdown is on.

Only a couple weeks until the day of pink, cookies, hearts and general love related things is upon us.

Also until we eat all the chewy gluten free dairy free brownies and paleo chocolate avocado cake that we can get our hungry mouths on!So, this steak is MEGA EASY. Which I think is kind of a trend on account of all the other steak recipes I’ve shared – keto steak, mango curry steak and Asian miso steak sheet pan dinner, have also been SUPER easy. We even had balsamic steak salad which, you guessed it, EASY.

This steak is “embarrassed to share it with you kind of easy”, but you don’t mind right? I mean, there’s coconut, spice, coffee AND chocolate so I figured your face would be like “yum,” and you would forgive me for sharing something so easy peasy.

The PERFECT Valentine’s Day Dinner

If you’re like Mr. FFF and I, staying in sometimes sounds like a MUCH more appealing option on Valentine’s Day. To cozy up in your own space and cook together can be so fun and romantic, too! Today’s easy coffee rub for steak is going to make you throw your plans away and stay in instead. It’s deep and rich coffee flavor combined with the perfect cut of steak is enough to make anyone’s mouth water! It also uses CHOCOLATE as an ingredient, so I mean, who can resist! It’s perfect to cook up for the one you love to share a meal on Valentine’s Day!

Does Coffee Rub taste like Coffee?

Cooking up a couple of perfectly cooked steaks with this delicious coffee steak rub recipe is definitely a good idea as it will spice up your steak and make it unique! However, if you’ve never combined coffee with steak before, you might be wondering what it tastes like. The coffee rub does have a coffee flavor to it, but once you cook the steaks the flavor runs into the meat, complimenting it and deepening the flavor of the steak itself!

Ingredients Needed

You may think that for a coffee rub for steak, all you need to do is rub on some coffee grounds and you’re good to go! There are actually a variety of spices needed to make this steak recipe, and they all work together to create MAGIC in your steak- the flavor can’t be matched! Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Ground coffee
  • Salt
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Chili Powder
  • Smoked Paprika
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Pepper
  • Unsweetened Coconut Flakes
  • New York Strip Steak

How to make Coffee Rubbed Steak

Make the Rub

Combine the rub ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

Prepare the Steak

Using a sharp knife on a cutting board, trim off any large and visible chunks of fat from the steak. Next, take the rub, and using your hands, generously rub it all over the steak on all sides. Cover it and chill in the fridge for at least an hour to ensure the flavor can infuse through the meat.

Heat

Set your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and let it preheat. Spray a grill pan with cooking oil spray and preheat it on high.

Cook

Sear the steak on both sides for a minute or two. Next, reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking until the steak reaches your desired doneness. Once cooked, transfer the steak to a plate and cover tightly with tin foil to rest.

Toast

While the steak rests, line a pan with parchment and place the coconut flakes on the paper. Pop it in the oven and toast the coconut for a minute or two, until it is lightly golden brown and fragrant.

DEVOUR

Top your steaks with the toasted coconut, serve and enjoy!

How to know when Steak is done

This all depends on how you like your steak cooked! Using a meat thermometer, pierce the middle of your steak for a reading. Here’s a guide to know when it’s done:

  • Rare: 130-135 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Medium Rare: 140-145 degrees
  • Medium: 155-160 degrees
  • Medium Well: 160-165 degrees
  • Well Done: 165-170 degrees

Serving Suggestions for Coffee Rubbed Steak

This steak pairs well with so many different sides to make the perfect meal for a date night or celebration of any kind! I recommend serving it alongside some red skin mashed potatoes or whole30 mashed potatoes along with a side of hot veggies! Some of my personal faves are cumin roasted carrots and oven balsamic roasted brussels sprouts.

Serves: 2
Prep: 10 minutes minutes
Cook: 10 minutes minutes
Total: 20 minutes minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Ground coffee
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp Onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp Chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Coconut sugar
  • 1/8 tsp Cinnamon
  • Pinch of pepper
  • 2 Tbsp Unsweetened coconut flakes, for garnishing
  • 1/2 Lb New York Strip steak

Instructions

  • Combine the rub ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside.
  • Cut any large, visible chunks of fat off the steak and coat it with the rub. Really get in there and make sure the steak is well covered.
  • Cover the steak and let it sit for at least an hour in the refrigerator, preferably longer to really infuse the flavour in.
  • Spray a grill pan (or a regular pan) with cooking spray and preheat on high heat. Also, preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  • Cook the steak until it is nice and seared on each side, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  • Turn down the heat to medium and continue cooking until it has reached the desired level of done-ness - I like 135 degrees internally for medium rare.
  • Once the steak is cooked, transfer to a plate and cover with tinfoil to rest for 5-7 minutes.
  • While the steak is resting, toast the coconut flakes on a small, parchment paper lined baking tray. Watch closely as they only take 1 or 2 minutes to get nice and and golden.
  • Serve the steak topped with the toasted coconut flakes.
  • Devour!

The rub really didn’t add any flavor to the meat. I am going to try to marinate the meat overnight and see if that helps because marinating the meat for only one hour gave the meat no flavor.

Hi Sarah, I’m sorry to hear that. Marinating the meat overnight should definitely help infuse more flavor into the steak. Make sure to massage the rub well into the steak to ensure even coverage. I hope that marinating overnight and making these adjustments will lead to a more flavorful result. Enjoy!
